The building. NRS Royal Palace was built in the Mughal-Rajput manner and made no compromises about it. Four storeys of hand-carved cream sandstone, an arcade of cusped ogee arches running the full width of every floor, white jali screens cut by hand, deep relief bands of flowering vine between the levels, and three gilded onion domes standing above the roofline. Inside: marble underfoot, carved teak at every threshold, a tiered marble fountain in the hall, and headboards set into arches that echo the arcade outside. It is ornate on purpose. Puri is a city of temples and the building was made to belong to it.
"It is ornate on purpose. Puri is a city of temples and the building was made to belong to it."
The location. We are directly in front of the beach on New Marine Drive Road. The Jagannath Temple is three and a half kilometres away, Swargdwar under two, and the Sea Beach Market close enough to walk when the evening is cool. Konark and Chilika are each about an hour by car. Very few hotels in Puri put you this close to both the shore and the temple.

The service. Quality services demand quality people. Someone is at the desk at every hour, there is a doctor on call, and the travel desk will arrange a car before you have finished asking. Breakfast comes early for guests going to darshan. It is a large staff for a house this size, and that is the point.
"Quality services demand quality people."
The rooms. Fifty-two rooms across four categories — Deluxe, Premium, Grand and Royal Suite — all air-conditioned, some facing the sea. Every one has a tea and coffee maker, hot and cold water at any hour, and two bottles of packaged water a day. Sea-facing and non sea-facing, smoking and non-smoking, and an iron when you ask for it.

The table. SHRADHA seats fifty-two under a coffered ceiling and marble underfoot. Odia classics, Bengali seafood, pan-Indian plates, and a breakfast buffet. bistro Y seats thirty-seven, quieter and darker, with brass lanterns overhead. Above both, the terrace opens in the evening, under the arches, with the coast on one side.
The occasions. A lawn of six thousand seven hundred square feet with the lit facade behind it. Aamantran Hall, two thousand square feet for up to 120 guests. Darbar Hall, seven hundred square feet for board meetings. Weddings, Conferences, Seminars, Gatherings, Pre-Wedding Functions, Birthday Parties — the spaces are here and so is the team that runs them.
