AROUND US

Around the Palace

Directly in front of Puri Beach.

Puri Beach

in front of the hotel

Cross the road and you are on the sand. The Bay of Bengal here is wide, shallow-shelving and busy from before dawn, when fishing boats come in and the light is at its best. Sunrise is the reason to set an alarm. Allow an hour, or a morning.

Swargdwar Beach

1.8 km

The cremation ghat and the stretch of sand beside it, and the most spiritually charged part of the shoreline. Quieter than the main beach in the middle of the day. Visitors are welcome but discretion is expected. Allow half an hour.

Puri Sea Beach Market

2.1 km

Pattachitra scroll paintings, palm-leaf engraving, appliqué work from Pipili, seashell craft and a great deal of everything else. Prices move with the season and bargaining is expected. Allow an hour, more if you buy.

Jagannath Temple

3.5 km

The reason most people come to Puri. Twelfth-century, one of the four Char Dham, and among the most important pilgrimage sites in India. Non-Hindus are not permitted inside, but the view from the Raghunandan Library rooftop opposite is open to all. Go early — queues build sharply after eight. Allow two hours, and note that phones and leather are not allowed inside.

Puri Railway Station

5.5 km

Roughly fifteen minutes by car. The travel desk arranges pick-up and drop with notice.

Sakshi Gopal Temple

20 km

The witness temple, where by tradition Krishna followed a devotee to give evidence on his behalf. Traditionally visited after Jagannath rather than before. About forty minutes each way. Allow half a day with travel.

Konark Sun Temple

40 km

A thirteenth-century chariot in stone, twenty-four carved wheels and seven horses, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The carving rewards a slow walk and a guide. An hour's drive along the marine road, which is itself worth the trip. Allow half a day.

Chilika Lake

40 km

Asia's largest brackish lagoon. Irrawaddy dolphins year-round if you are lucky, and migratory birds in winter in very large numbers. Boats go from Satapada. Go early for calm water. Allow a full day.

How We Plan Your Day

1

Tell us the shape of it.

Date, numbers, and what matters most to you. A phone call is usually faster than a form.

2

See the spaces.

Walk the lawn and the hall, and we will show you how each is laid out for a party your size.

3

Build the day.

Menu tasting, décor, timings, room blocks for guests travelling in. We put it in writing so nothing is assumed.

4

We run it.

On the day, one coordinator stays with you from setup to send-off.
